In the case U.S. v. GlaxoSmithKline LLC, GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor criminal charges. By pleading guilty, GSK is to pay $3 billion to settle the case that is now considered the largest case of healthcare fraud in U.S. history. The drugmaker allegedly broke U.S. laws in the way they marketed and developed their pharmaceuticals. GSK pushed the antidepressant Paxil to underaged patients when it was only approved for adult use and the drug Wellbutrin for unapproved uses like weight loss and sexual dysfunction. The company distributed a false medical journal article and supplied doctors with illegal kickbacks. GSK continued the misconduct from the late 1990s through 2007.
