A South Carolina Man pleaded guilty to participating in a sceme to obtain $671,000 by cutting off a mentally disabled man’s hand with a chainsaw. The incident took place years ago when the defendant tied the man’s arm to a tree with rags and slicing it off below the elbow with a chainsaw. The defendant took out an insurance policy on the now-amputee that would pay off in the event of his death or dismemberment.

Fraud expert Linda Webb, aka The Fraud Dog, says during desperate times encourage some fraudsters to take desperate measures. In this case, the desperate measure was literally cutting another person’s hand off in order to obtain money. Certainly, there are some fraudsters out there that would engage in this type of behavior, causing bodily harm, to gain financially. More proactive measures must be taken to stop the fraudster before they are able to cause bodily harm. Tougher sentencing guidelines for those who do cause harm to others in the process of committing fraud need to be implemented. Most importantly, we need to educate the public and having a Fraud Fighting television show would provide public awareness to a growing concern as fraud continues to escalade.
